Liturgical Art

Liturgical art is art in the service of worship.  It is art that encourages people to enter into the act of worship and participate fully in worship.  This is the mark of good liturgical art.  Liturgical art may serve the function of creating a worshipful atmosphere; informing a worship participant about the topic, theme, or mood of the day; focusing attention on a specific act of worship; or any combination of the above.  In developing liturgical art, one must know and understand the worship practices of a congregation.

Bryan Schneider-Thomas has worked with congregation in producing finished artwork, designs that a congregation has finished, and workshops to teach the skills and concepts of liturgical art to members of a congregation.

Bryan's liturgical art journey began in quilting and embroidery.  To this he has added skills in weaving, spinning, and other fiber techniques.  Currently his interests focus on dying and paper making.  Through his work in liturgical design consulting, he has also begun designing liturgical furnishing, partnering with congregation members or woodworking professionals to develop the final piece.

Custom Design

Custom design work allows a congregation receive a finished design which they will implement.  This cost effective way of working allows the congregation to use volunteers for production.  Custom design work may include the basic design and leadership in the completion of the piece, including the teaching of new skills.

Finished Work

Finished pieces are artwork that is produced from concept to installation.  All finished work is developed in consultation with the congregation.  The congregation offers input into the design and reviews final designs.  Currently the studio is taking on a limited amount of finished work.

Workshops

Workshops teach the skills for congregation members to learn how to produce liturgical art.  The result is an investment in the congregation that can be quite rewarding.  Topics range from theoretical to practical and each workshop is customized to the needs of a specific congregation.
