A Place for Baptism by
Regina Kuehn
Looking only at baptismal fonts and space, this book has some wonderful
information and ideas. Unfortunately the pictures are mostly black and
white. |

Building for Effective Mission by Kennon Callahan
The title of this book is a bit deceiving. It provides an enormous
amount of information about missions, assessing what a congregation is
currently doing and what it should be doing. It is also helpful at
looking at some of the issues around the missions/ministry of a congregation
and its building. Its actual building information is rather weak
though and tends to be oriented to very large churches. |
 |
Church Architecture by James & Susan White A nice
basic text on church architecture. It covers the various aspects of
what a worship space should include. The perspective is traditional in
nature. The information provided is theoretical rather than practical
and will require the congregation to translate theory into practice.
This is a helpful book for people to read to gain a basic understanding of
how the space should support the act of worship. |
| Our Place of Worship: Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
|
Our Place of Worship by Canadian Conference of
Catholic Bishops A very comprehensive overview of building from beginning
to dedication. Written for Roman Catholic parishes in Canada, there is
information to be gleaned by all. |
|
Places for Worship by Marchita Mauck This is a
small primer on the issues relating to renovating or building worship space.
While it is written from the Roman Catholic perspective, it is helpful to
anyone. It offers some help in hiring liturgical consultants and
architects. |
|
Repitching the Tent by Richard Giles My favorite
book on building for worship and ministry. This book provides an
enormous amount of information and challenges us to think seriously about
how the building supports (or hinders) what a congregation is trying to do.
There is a group study guide in the back of this book. |
|
Shaping a House for the Church by Marchita Mauck |
|
When Not to Build by Ray Bowman and Eddy Hall
Offers a very good perspective of how to use the current space you have to
the maximum before looking at building. This book provides a reality
check for any church that is thinking about entering into a building project |
| Where We Worship: Participant Book
|
Where We Worship by Walter Huffman and Anita Stauffer
Written specifically for Lutheran churches, this book is helpful for any
congregation that has a traditional liturgical perspective. the
workbook format is nice and the optional leader's guide makes it possible to
easily use this as a study for a building committee.

Worship Matters Vol. 1 & 2 edited by E. Byron
Anderson If you are United Methodist, these books can be useful.
They contain much more than just space issues, but do raise the questions of
creating worship space, using art in worship, and the use of media in
worship. |
